![]() ![]() Her work has become more public and politicized since Trump’s inauguration in 2017. Beginning in the ’70s, when she was a graduate student at Cal Arts, the history of art and politics, especially feminist art, has been an essential part of her artistic practice. ![]() In 2017, she was elected to the National Academy of Design. Schor is a scholar, painter, and essayist whose books - such as Wet: On Painting, Feminism, and Art Culture and A Decade of Negative Thinking: Essays on Art, Politics, and Daily Life - and artwork have been honored with numerous awards. For both Schor and Faruqee, the role of artists in the political arena is an essential subject for discussion. And it’s fitting that the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown is using the painting to promote her upcoming virtual conversation, “Art and Activism,” with painter Anoka Faruqee, next Thursday, April 29. But think again: the “not” can be read ironically, echoing surrealist René Magritte’s famous line of text, under the image of a pipe: “ Ceci n’est pas une pipe.” Mira Schor returns home from the Provincetown farmers market in 2016. At first glance, the piece, by artist Mira Schor, could be a protest rally sign. Sawako develops a lot as a character volume two. And then there are some moments that were just plain funny. But there are some really inspiration moments. This only made reading this all the more painful. I am starting to feel like Sawako is a best friend of mine. Some moments had my eyes watering so much that they started forming into droplets of tears! I just felt so sad for Sawako and the situation she was in. There were a lot of sad moments in this one little volume which surprised me greatly. I read this volume without stopping because I wanted to see what happened to Sawako and her friendship with Yano and Yoshida. The rumors, Sawako’s low self-esteem, and her tendency to not care what she wants as a person are all things that get in the way with that. Sawako’s friendship with Yano and Yoshida is challenged by a lot in this volume. ![]() You don’t see that in a lot of shojo manga. It not only has a bit of sweet romance but it also has friendship in it. So much happens in this volume but all of it focuses on one thing: the importance of friendship. This is a series that will make you smile…and sometimes it will have your heart shattering into a million pieces from emotion. I have learned that the Kimi ni Todoke series has a heartwarming story about first love and friendships and knowing about what you want. I don’t know how many times my eyes watered, but I do know that they watered a lot–from both sadness and happiness. ![]() ![]() ![]() Greg is unable to play outside due to a rivalry between groups on his street: those who live on the straight Lower Surrey Street or the slanted Upper Surrey Street. Well from church-going, if we’re talking about prayer, or from reading other poems, if we’re talking about poetry, or perhaps just from living, in either case. ![]() If prayer is “a kind of tune,” then so too is poetry: an improvisation on or an ad hoc approximation of a structure we have in our heads. I think there’s a beautiful kind of tension-and you’ll hear it in the episode-between, on the one hand, that desire for a kind of poetry that could be understood completely and all at once, and, on the other, the method Herbert employs here, which is after all a sequential list of beautiful (and often beautifully vague) appositive phrases. It’s a poem in which all parts exist at the same time, even though when reading it, of course, you read it in a certain order.” As Stephen says, “This is not so much a poem that has a beginning, and a middle, and an end. One of the things Stephen and I talk about in the episode is the kind of speech act that prayer is, and how that might be like what happens when you read a poem out loud. ![]() ![]() Original female Character & Charles II of England. ![]()
